During the course of preparing to give a Shiur on the implications of the phraseology of Birchat HaGomel, the blessing recited when someone has successfully navigated a threatening experience (see e.g., Berachot 54b; Shulchan Aruch, Orech Chayim 101:2), i.e., “HaGomel LeChayavim Tovot” (He Who Acts kindly towards those who are culpable/deserving of punishment), I had occasion to revisit some of R. J.B. Soloveitchik’s ideas regarding prayer in general, which seem to me to offer a particular perspective on the language of this blessing.
