During the course of his evocative essay appearing in The Times of Israel for Nov. 5, 2015, “How Do We Want to Live? The Meanings of Jewish Belonging in Our Time” ( http://blogs.timesofisrael.com/how-do-we-want-to-live%E2%80%AD-%E2%80%AC-the-meanings-of-jewish-belonging-in-our-time/ ), Yehuda Mirsky invokes an idea expressed by R. Kook about the nature of Jewish identity. Mirsky is certainly well-positioned to discuss R. Kook’s vast writings not only because he wrote his doctoral dissertation about him, but also last year authored a significant book plumbing the writings of this iconic and seminal figure in modern Jewish history (Rav Kook: Mystic in a Time of Revolution http://yalepress.yale.edu/book.asp?isbn=9780300164244 ; my reviews of the book can be found at http://www.jewishbookcouncil.org/book/rav-kook-mystic-in-a-time-of-revolution and https://rayanotyaakov.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/review-of-mirsky-on-r-kook.pdf ) (At the end of Mirsky’s essay, it is noted that this is one of 17 essays on the “current state of the Israel-Disapora relationship” which comprises a special issue of Eretz Acheret magazine, and that can be downloaded at http://jmgads.com/eretz_aheret/ )
