In R. Jonathan Sacks’ 2019 essay for Parashat Acharei Mot, “Thinking Fast and Slow” (Thinking Fast and Slow (Acharei Mot 5779) – Rabbi Sacks ), he presents an hypothesis informed by current neuroscience theories regarding one of the most iconic aspects of the Yom HaKippurim Tabernacle/Temple service, the utilization of two goats:
VaYikra 16:7-10, 21-2
7 And he shall take two “Se’irim” (goats,) and set them before the LORD at the door of the Tent of Meeting. 8 And Aharon shall cast lots upon the two goats: one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for Azazel. 9 And Aharon shall present the goat upon which the lot fell for the LORD, and offer him for a Sin-offering. 10 But the goat, on which the lot fell for Azazel, shall be set alive before the LORD, to make atonement over him, to send him away for Azazel into the wilderness… Continue reading
