In R. Aharon Lichtenstein’s 1992 Sicha for Parashat Acharei Mot, “Halicha BeChukot HaGoyim” (הליכה בחוקות הגויים | vbm haretzion), he wonders about the superfluous language in the relevant verse in the Parashat HaShavua:
VaYikra 18:3
After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do; and after the doings of the land of Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do; neither shall ye walk in their statutes.
R. Lichtenstein initially asks: If the Tora has already prohibited Jews from engaging in actions practiced by the Egyptian and Canaanite native populations, why does it also prohibit their “statutes”? And what are their “statutes” in the first place? Continue reading
