In Parashat Lech Lecha, no sooner than Avraham complies with God’s Command to leave his homeland and relocate to the land of Canaan, that a famine plagues the land. RaMBaN, who invokes the Rabbinic principle “Ma’asei Avot Siman LeBanim” (the deeds of the fathers are precursors for what will happen to their descendants) throughout Beraishit, notes that Avraham and Sara’s sojourn in Egypt as a result of a famine, presages the Jewish people’s eventual “temporary” relocation to Egypt through the agency of Yosef, the afflictions that they suffered as a result of Pharoah’s animus, and their ultimate redemption via God’s miraculous Plagues.
