In his fascinating book, Lives of Moral Leadership, Robert Coles, the Harvard psychiatrist and moral philosopher, invokes a line from Walker Percy’s The Moviegoer several times:
“…the moral leadership we provide or are inspired by in public life, in schools and universities, in our cultural, civic, and religious lives, in our homes, and at critical moments in our personal life, when…’we hand one another along.’”
