Continuing our discussion of the binding of Isaac begun in the last post, “Accounting for Avraham’s Silence in the Face of the Akeida”, we turn to a notable Jewish thinker of the 20th century. Yeshayahu Leibowitz (1903-94), brother of the well-known bible teacher Nechama, was a polymath: professor of biochemistry, organic chemistry and neurophysiology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and articulator of views on Judaism, ethics, religion and politics.
