HaRav Shlomo Yosef Zevin, Z”L, editor of the magisterial Entzyklopedia Talmudit, authored a number of other notable works as well. In his profound sweeping essays on themes in Talmud and Halacha, entitled LeOhr HaHalacha (Avraham Tziyoni, Tel-Aviv) he includes “LeShitot Beit Shamai U’Beit Hillel” (Regarding the Approaches of the Yeshiva of Shamai and the Yeshiva of Hillel) in which he hypothesizes regarding the common denominator uniting many of the arguments between these two schools of thought. And, as perhaps an extension of this essay, in his collection of essays on Parashiot HaShavua and the Jewish holidays, LaTora U’LeMoadim (Avraham Tziyoni, Tel-Aviv, 1961), R. Zevin discusses a particular dispute between these two Yeshivot concerning Chanuka, entitled, “Ohr Oh Uhr?” (Fire or Light?)
